The consultation for Mackay’s Law launched by the Scottish Conservatives is still open.
The Proposed Removal from Office and Recall Bill, put forward by my colleague Graham Simpson MSP, will ensure MSPs who fail to carry out their duties and disgrace their position will be removed from office.
This has become necessary after former SNP Minister Derek Mackay shamefully stayed on as an MSP for 15 months after it emerged he had sent 270 text messages to a teenage boy and was forced to resign as Finance Secretary. During this time Derek Mackay continued to collect a full salary and claimed expenses together amounting to over £150,000 despite not attending any meetings or votes in parliament.
Never again should MSPs such as Derek Mackay be able to abuse their position like this.
I encourage everyone to take part in the consultation for this bill which is open until the 13th April:
