NFU Mutual Reports Increase in Countryside Crime

Unfortunately, it is important that during this time we are mindful that there are opportunistic criminals who are taking advantage of the current pandemic.

Across the UK, there have been reports of thefts in the countryside, including quads and ATVs being stolen as well as tractors, telehandlers, horse boxes and trailers, and newer Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) thefts.

NFU Mutual and the Scottish Partnership Against Rural Crime are reminding farmers and rural communities to take all possible steps to secure their property.

Please read the following security advice:
• It’s vital that keys are removed from machines and stored securely in a remote location
• Keep machinery out of sight - where possible store machinery in a locked building or where it can’t be seen from the road
• Use the CESAR marking and registration system. Markings make your property less attractive to criminals and can help recover your belongings if they are stolen
• Install immobilisers and trackers on tractors and loaders
• Know what you own. Take pictures of your vehicle and record serial numbers

Please report any suspicious behaviour or stolen vehicles to the police on 101, or 999 in an emergency.
